Your gîte on the Alsace Wine Route

Stay in a 1723 half-timbered house in a walled wine village, surrounded by vines, with the growers' cellars a short stroll from your front door.

Panorama of Dambach-la-Ville nestled in the vineyards of the Alsace Wine Route

The Alsace Wine Route winds for roughly 170 kilometres (about 105 miles) from Marlenheim to Thann, linking dozens of winegrowing villages with their half-timbered houses and flower-lined lanes. The trick to enjoying it is not to race through: the smart move is to base yourself in a village that is genuinely part of it, then explore from cellar to cellar at an unhurried pace.

Our gîte, Au Cœur de l'Ours, sits exactly where you want to be — in Dambach-la-Ville, a fortified wine village set right among the vines, inside an Alsatian house dating from 1723. Here you are not simply 'near' the vineyards; you are in them. The Grand Cru Frankstein begins just beyond the medieval ramparts, the vineyard trail starts in the village, and the growers' cellars are an easy walk away.

When evening comes, you return to the quiet of a wine village, free parking in the village and a warm apartment with exposed beams. The bakery is right across the street and three restaurants are about 200 metres away — so you can savour Alsace without ever getting back in the car.

A gîte right on the Wine Route

Dambach-la-Ville is one of those villages that sums up the whole Alsatian vineyard in a single view: medieval ramparts with their fortified gates, half-timbered houses, and all around them a sea of vines. The village is best known for its Grand Cru Frankstein, a granite terroir that gives wonderfully fine, mineral Rieslings and Gewurztraminers.

From the gîte, almost everything is on foot. The marked vineyard trail leaves the village and climbs between the rows of vines up to the Saint-Sébastien chapel — an easy loop, lovely in late afternoon when the slope turns golden and the Alsatian plain stretches out towards Germany's Black Forest. It is also the best way to understand what you will taste afterwards: the soil, the grape varieties and the work of the growers.

And because the village sits on the regional train line from Strasbourg to Sélestat (via Molsheim and Barr), you can even reach this stretch of the Wine Route without a car — and taste with a clear conscience.

Wine tasting with the village winegrowers

The real joy of a stay in the heart of the vineyard is pushing open the cellar doors. In Dambach-la-Ville, several winegrowers welcome visitors for a tasting: you work through the seven Alsace grape varieties — Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Sylvaner, Muscat, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir — and of course the Grand Cru Frankstein, talking directly with the people who make the wine.

Because the cellars are in the village itself, you can walk to them straight from the gîte: no need to nominate a designated driver, and everyone gets to enjoy the tasting. Just remember to phone ahead or call in during the day, as many estates work by appointment or keep seasonal opening hours that change through the year.

To make the moment last, nothing could be simpler: pick up a few bottles, then open them back at the apartment in the evening around the big table, with a board of Alsatian cheese and charcuterie bought in the village.

Wine villages worth a detour nearby

From Dambach-la-Ville, some of the loveliest villages on the Wine Route are only minutes away by car. Here is a selection, with real driving times from the gîte:

When to come: the vineyard through the seasons

The Alsatian vineyard feels different in every season. In spring and summer the vines turn green and the villages overflow with geraniums: the ideal time for the vineyard trail and for sitting out on a terrace. In autumn the slopes blaze yellow and red, and the highlight of the year arrives — the grape harvest.

Seeing the harvest is seeing the vineyard come alive: trailers on the move, the smell of pressed grapes, the bustle in the cellars. It is also the season for tasting the first juices, when the atmosphere in the villages is at its warmest. Dates vary with the vintage and the weather, so check the exact period for the current year before you book.

In winter, finally, the Wine Route takes on another character: illuminated villages, Christmas markets and mulled wine. Whatever the season, you are in the right place to make the most of it.

Why base yourself in Dambach-la-Ville for the Wine Route?

Choosing Dambach-la-Ville as your base means sleeping in the vineyard rather than beside it. The village holds a central position, roughly halfway between Strasbourg and Colmar, and stays well connected by both train and road. You can range easily to the neighbouring villages by day and come home to a peaceful wine village at night.

Getting here is straightforward. Strasbourg airport and EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg both serve the region, and the TGV reaches Strasbourg from Paris in about 1 hour 50 minutes; from there, a car is the most rewarding way to follow the Wine Route at your own pace.

At the gîte, three self-contained apartments (sleeping 4 to 7, up to 15 guests in all) make it just as easy to come as a couple, a family or a group of wine-loving friends. Each has a fully equipped kitchen — perfect for laying out a table of local produce and uncorking the bottles brought back from the cellars. With a 9.8/10 rating on Booking, free parking in the village and the bakery across the road, comfort is assured for a true stay in the heart of the vineyard.

Frequently asked questions

Is the gîte really on the Alsace Wine Route?

Yes. Dambach-la-Ville is a fortified wine village set directly on the Alsace Wine Route, surrounded by vines, with its own Grand Cru Frankstein and a vineyard trail that starts in the village. The gîte sits at the heart of that village, within walking distance of the winegrowers' cellars.

Can I go wine tasting on foot from the gîte?

Absolutely. Several winegrowers in the village welcome visitors for tastings you can reach on foot from the gîte, so there is no need to drive or nominate a designated driver. Many estates receive guests by appointment or keep variable hours, so it is best to phone ahead or call in during the day.

Which Wine Route villages can I visit from Dambach-la-Ville?

The immediate neighbours are superb: Barr and Sélestat are about 15 minutes away, Obernai around 20 minutes. Heading south, the walled village of Riquewihr is roughly 30 minutes, Kaysersberg about 35, and the pastel houses of Eguisheim around 40 minutes by car.

Can you watch the grape harvest in Alsace?

Autumn is harvest season, generally from late summer into autumn depending on the vintage and the weather. It is a lively, warm time in the wine villages. The exact dates change every year, so check the current year's period before you set your travel dates.

Do I need a car to explore the Alsace Wine Route?

Not necessarily. Plenty is within walking distance of the village: the vineyard trail, the growers' cellars and the restaurants. For the neighbouring villages a car is the most flexible option, but Dambach-la-Ville is also on the regional train line from Strasbourg to Sélestat, which lets you travel without driving after a tasting.

Is the gîte suitable for a group wine-tasting stay?

Yes. The three apartments sleep 4 to 7 guests each, up to 15 in all if you book the whole house, and every one has a fully equipped kitchen and a large table. It is ideal for a stay with wine-loving friends, with free parking in the village and the village cellars just steps away.
